Image to a DMC-numbered chart, symbol grid and PDF

Images never leave this browser
Free preview. The chart is built in your browser; your photo is never uploaded. DMC colour numbers are matched to approximate screen RGB. A small PDF is free. The full multi-page chart is a $2.99 one-time unlock (coming soon unless payments are on).

DMC colour numbers

Stitch counts are exact. Skein figures are an estimate for 2 strands on the fabric count you picked (8 m skein, 6 strands, plus 20% for the back).

One drill per coloured cell. Shops sell drills in different bag sizes, so this is a count, not a bag count. Canvas size assumes a 2.5 mm drill.

On-screen preview is full size. The free PDF is a single page of at most 60 × 60 stitches, with a light watermark. No key and no thread list.

How it works

  1. Add a photo or the generated sample, then drag a crop if you do not want the whole picture.
  2. Set stitches across (50 to 300), the fabric count (14, 16 or 18) and the maximum number of colours. Dithering is optional.
  3. Switch the preview between colour blocks and symbols. The table lists each DMC colour number, the name and the stitch count.
  4. Download a free one-page PDF, or unlock the full multi-page chart, key and thread list when payments are on.

Frequently asked questions

Is my photo uploaded?

No. Colour matching and the PDF are built in your browser. The site counts anonymous events and stores a comment or email only if you submit one.

Which thread colours does it use?

DMC colour numbers from a community list of 489 stranded-floss colours (craft-color-codes by MakeBead, CC BY 4.0). The RGB values are screen approximations, not a DMC colour card. Compare a skein before you buy a lot of thread.

What size can the chart be?

You set the width from 50 to 300 stitches. Height follows the crop. Fabric is 14, 16 or 18-count aida, and the page shows the finished size in inches and centimetres.

What is free, and what is $2.99?

The on-screen preview is free at any size you set. The free PDF is one page, at most 60 by 60 stitches, with a light watermark. The $2.99 unlock is a one-time guest checkout for the full multi-page chart, the key and the thread list, without a watermark. When payments are off, that block says coming soon.

Will Pattern Keeper import the PDF?

The full PDF is a portrait vector chart: selectable symbol text, vector grid lines with a heavier line every 10 stitches, a key headed Symbol, Number, Name and Stitches, and a 3-stitch overlap when the chart is split. Pattern Keeper does not publish one strict spec, so check the file in the app. The cover is a colour preview without a symbol grid.

How are skeins estimated?

It assumes an 8 metre skein of 6-strand floss, stitched with 2 strands. One cross is two diagonals of the fabric square, plus 20 percent for the back. That is an estimate, not a DMC figure. The stitch count itself is exact.

Can I crop the photo?

Yes. Drag a rectangle on the picture, or reset the crop to use the whole photo. You can also treat white or transparent pixels as no stitch.

Is this affiliated with DMC or Pattern Keeper?

No. DMC and Pattern Keeper are trademarks of their owners. This tool is unofficial and not affiliated with either of them. Use photos you have the right to use.
